Rhythm: 1, 2, 3&4, 5&6 also common are 8-count patterns that are counted 1, 2, 3&4, 5, 6, 7&8 Patterns, however can be any combination of walks, triples steps and variations thereof over several measures of music.
Time Signature: 4/4 timing.
Tempo: Socially between 83-130 BPM, but officially between 112-128 BPM.Music Style: Nearly any style and genre of music from faster-tempo songs to slower-tempo songs, from Hip-hop, to Blues, to Rock n’ Roll, and many other styles
Character: A hip, newer style of swing that allows for the greatest amount of play and personal interpretation of the music. The patterns consist of basic walking steps and triple steps, and variations thereof that your body can play with. Connection between partners is a huge part of this dance. The character of the dance is what you make of it. This dance started off as a bar dance (and still is), and is danced on the slot.
Where you can use it: Just about ANYWHERE. If you hear music, likely you’ll hear a song you can West Coast Swing to. This is the most useful dance to know because the music used spans all genres and time-periods of today’s music. Even Fox Trot, Cha-Cha, Hustle and Swing music is often appropriate to West Coast Swing to.
