Rhythm: 1, 2, 3&4, 5&6 (for a triple-time swing) 1, 2, 3 4, 5 6 (for a double-time swing) and 1, 2, 3 5 (for a single-time swing a.k.a. Jitterbug sometimes), varied for Lindy Hop.
Time Signature: 4/4 timing.
Tempo: Between 136-152 BPM for a Triple time swing, between 152-176 BPM for a Double time swing & between 176-192 for a Single time swing, with gusts up to 225 for Lindy Hop, though Lindy Hop can be much slower as well.
Music Style: 40’s Big Band sound and Rock n’ Roll.
Character: Swing is the All-American good time dance, good ol’ be-boppin fun. Lindy Hop can range from sultry with the slower songs to incredibly playful, almost cheeky, if you will.
Where you can use it: Variety bands at clubs, bars, and/or private parties often play lots of Swing-able rock n’ roll, or actual Big Band Swing music. Many of the Swing clubs have died off, but there are still a few clubs in many cities around the U.S. where you can find Swing being played and danced. As always, you will find all styles of music, including Swing at ballroom dances.
