Category: Social Latin dance and American Rhythm
Rhythm: 2,3,4, 6,7,8 or QQS QQS
Time Signature: 4/4 timing.
Tempo: Between 188-204 BPM.
Music Style: Music that sounds almost exactly like Salsa. The music is difficult for a novice ear to distinguish one from the other. Mambo music also incorporates the Cuban Son sound and African percussions, and has similar ranges in tempo and the same rhythmical feeling of the QQS.
Character: Depending on the style of Mambo, the dance can either be like a much more casual, rounded salsa, or a sharp and smooth ballroom style. Both styles incorporate Cuban Motion.
Where you can use it: You can dance Mambo at any Salsa club around the world. Salsa is done in every corner of the Earth, and typically Salsa clubs aren’t hard to find. You can just as easily dance Mambo, since, essentially, they are the same thing. Latin bands will often play this rhythm, and many Latin parties, whether they be birthdays, anniversaries, or baptisms, will play this music too. As always, you will find all styles of music, including Mambo played at ballroom dances.
