Ages: All! All! All!
Crowd: I haven't been to the Swing dance, but I have been to the ballroom dance here. From my experience, this crowd tends to be older, however, in general, East Coast Swing tends to attract a younger crowd. Dancers are of varying levels, from beginner to somewhat more advanced. Everyone there is there to dance, so expect people who know the general rules of the dance floor. The Midtown Stomp dance tends to attract younger crowds. All ages are welcome, and you’ll find all ages there, but kids love the energy and happiness of this dance. There are lots of beginners at this dance, but you’ll find a few advanced dancers out on the floor as well. All in all, everyone is very friendly and welcoming there. A great dance for beginners to get introduced into. This is where the hardcore Lindy Hoppers go to dance, so you’ll see some pretty advanced dancers there, but you’ll also see beginners as well, so there’s a good mix. In my experience the crowd has been super friendly and being in San Francisco is very diverse in cultures and in age ranges, though most are at least in there 20’s, on up to in their 50’s. Not many older than that, but you won’t find any youngsters out that late either on a school night. The crowd thins out quite a bit by 11pm or so.
What to Wear: I have not been there on a Swing night, but I can tell you many swing dancers like to dress up in 1940’s-1950’s style clothing. You’ll see a lot of the girls in skirts and the guys in slacks, but don’t feel like you have to dress in that style. If you go in jeans and a t-shirt, they’ll still let you dance just the same. Comments: I have not been to a Swing dance there, so I cannot further comment. Midtown Stomp is a fantastic dance for beginner dancers and younger people. I wouldn’t discourage any one “older” from going either, but just know there will be a lot of 16-20 year olds there. However, this dance is very friendly and welcoming, so beginner dancers should feel very comfortable there. The Russian Center is a huge and gorgeous building. The room is just gorgeous with its seemingly floor to cathedral ceiling windows and finer architectural details. And if you want some really good Lindy Hop dancing, this is the spot to check out! Expect most of the crowd to clear about by about 11pm-ish. Only the hardcore dancers stay later.
